Street Lamps

Are they already playing Christmas songs
you ask,
as you leave where you’ve been
and travel to where you’re going.
It’s raining
and the highway glistens
like the fine crystal
in your grandmother’s China Cabinet,
only this display
is a bit more sinister.
The reflections of the street lamps
in the thick glaze on the road
seem to descend like waterfalls
spilling into a dark, cold, subterranean world.
And as you drive for endless hours,
you want nothing more
except to plunge
into their unknown depths.
